If you’re a member of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), like I am, or know someone who’s one, the 100 days fast that began on January 2nd is no news. It’s been rough. I missed the very first day because I didn’t remember – it didn’t even cross my mind, until night time when a friend asked how I had fared!

Since then, I missed a few more – one for breaking at 3pm (even though I could have continued), another to nausea, and four more to sheer laziness X_X. I know the penalty for missing a day was to double it, so my seven days meant fourteen more days. That meant rather than ending on April 11th, like we should, I would be ending on April 25th. I didn’t want that, so I had to do something drastic. I also know that a whole week of fasting without breaking equals 14 days, and a month of fasting without breaking equals the 100 days. So, I opted to do one week of fasting to make up for my missed days.

I started February 1st and ended February 7th. It was actually nuts. Certainly one of the hardest things I’ve ever embarked upon. Even a friend volunteered to check up on me from time to time, and we even worked out an SOS signal! It got so bad that at some point during the week, I began to question the point of the fast. I even dreamt about chocolates one night lol. Thankfully, by the fourth day, I think my body had succumbed to the will of my spirit.

I will say this though, I enjoyed a stronger communion with God this past week; as all I could do, aside from work, leisure time, drink water and milk (to prevent an ulcer), was to pray and read my bible. It was during one of my “episodes of questioning”, I got reminded of a revelation on faith the Holy Spirit had given me over a year ago. This is what I wish to share today. Hopefully, in some little way, it encourages others who struggle/are struggling with the idea of fasting and wondering what the point is of all this. I hope this speaks to you:

The link between God and man is faith in Jesus Christ. We all know from Hebrews 11:1: faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith is perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses] (AMP). My revelation was faith or F.A.I.T.H. is Forgetting All Impossibilities, Trust Him. It means abandoning/forsaking all difficulty, all futility, all impracticability, all infeasibility, all unattainability, all unlikelihood, and simply, trust God.

You’ll note that it isn’t “forget” all impossibilities, it’s “forgetting”. It is a continuous act. It isn’t something you switch on when you have to, but you need to have your faith burning every second of every day. Metanoia is the Greek word for repentance. I know repentance is Christendom means confessing all sins, forsaking all evil ways, and professing Jesus as Lord over you life and Saviour of your soul. I’m referring to the literal meaning of Metanoia – to change one’s mindset. You need to change your mindset on the concept of faith as something you need to hold on to in times of need only. The bible already states in Hebrews 11:6a: And without faith, it is impossible to please God (NIV). I’m sure you don’t want to please God only in your time of need, right? You definitely want to trust God for every single detail of your life.

Anyway, we all need faith during this period for our individual reasons; which I believe can be summed up into:

1. Deliverance/Salvation: For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? – Romans 8:24 (AMP).

2. Relationship:  But without faith it is impossible to please God and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists – Hebrews 11:6a-b (AMP).

3. Miracles and Testimonies: He is a rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out] – Hebrews 11:6c (AMP).

All you have to do is renew your mind, and this period is the perfect time to start. Even if you’re not fasting, today is always the best time to start the renewed you. Repent (change your mind and purpose); turn around and return [to God], that your sins may be erased (blotted out, wiped clean), that times of refreshing (of recovering from the effects of heat, of [a] reviving with fresh air) may come from the presence of the Lord – Acts 3:19 (AMP).

So, my fellow RCCG members, as you’ve decided to seek His face this season, your times of refreshing will come. All you need to do is simply continue FAITH – forgetting all impossibilities [and] trust Him – for your deliverance, for your salvation, for your renewed relationship with Him, for miracles, and for your testimonies. I hope this makes sense to you, and you’ll mull it over some more in your mind.

I’ve returned to my regular fast – breaking at 6pm – since yesterday. I’ve definitely learnt my lesson, and I won’t dear miss another day. I broke with just fruits yesterday, so I wouldn’t shock my body. I learnt a woman died last week in Nigeria because she broke with heavy food – eba or the likes. Please always break with fruits first, or at least, semiliquids/semisolids like custard and smoothies. Anyway, today, I’ll have a banana, and a delicious grilled chicken breast salad 😀

God bless you!
